About The Foundation

Throughout New England, LSS serves and cares for approximately 5,000 individuals in need every day. Charitable contributions made through LSS and the LSSNE Foundation provide for approximately $2 million of annual support for clients being served through any one of over 60 programs, dramatically increasing the quality of life for these individuals and the communities where they live.

Established in 1994, the LSS Foundation encourages individuals, corporations, churches and other organizations to become involved and to support vital ministries of human care in their communities and throughout New England. The Foundation provides for and manages fundraising and stewardship for LSS.

Fund raising activities include direct mail, capital campaigns, grant writing, special events and individual assistance with planning larger gifts including, appreciated assets, annuities, wills, trusts and estates.

In its role as fiduciary manager for charitable gifts to LSS, the Foundation maintains detailed financial records, complies with applicable policies, laws and regulations, manages the investments of gifts and endowments and ensures that gifts are disbursed in accordance with the donors wishes, or if undesignated, where the need is the greatest. When a donor designates a gift for a specific purpose or use that has already been met, LSS will apply that gift to a purpose or use as close as possible to the donor’s original intent. "The Lutheran Social Services of New England is self-supporting and attempts to be as efficient as possible in the administration and investment of funds. All costs of administration come from funds donated on a pro-rata basis."

In 1872, the first program of Lutheran social ministry in New England opened its doors. Brook Farm in West Roxbury, Massachusetts was the site of the Martin Luther Orphans' Home.
