"Give Liberty a Hand" Award goes to Jozefina Lantz of Lutheran Social Services
June 2, 2010
LSS Leader Recieves Award
Jozefina Lantz, director of Services for New Americans of Lutheran Social Services, was recognized by the Massachusetts Immigration and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) in June 1 with its annual “Give Liberty a Hand” award. The award was presented at a benefit dinner at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, Boston. Also receiving the GLAH award this year were Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and former Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun. The award recognizes those who have made an impact on immigration policy and contributed to causes that improve the lives of America’s newcomers. Past recipients have included the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. Lantz, who came to the United States as an immigrant from Yugoslavia, “has done outstanding work for the immigrant and refugee community, providing refugee resettlement services, case management, and employment and education programs” while at LSS. In 2001, Lantz established the LSS Immigration Legal Assistance program, which in 2009 provided legal counsel and representation to more than 750 immigrants. A member of the board of directors for the Worcester Community Action Council, she has also served on the Massachusetts Governor’s Advisory Council for Refugees and Immigrants
