CALL TO NEW ENGLAND FAITH-BASED ORGANZIATIONS
FEMA, Region 1 (New England states), has requested that faith-based groups report the availability of volunteer housing and cooling centers. In order to house volunteers, Churches much have at least one shower, an accessible kitchen and sleeping quarters. Churches interested in being cooling centers must have a usable kitchen, separate rooms for people to rest, and handicap accessibility (showers not required). These centers should be located away from the affected areas.
If your church wishes to be on-call to house volunteers or as a cooling center, we need the following information: the name of church, its physical address, and the number of a church representative. This representative must have immediate access to the church and be ready to open it at a moment's notice. If your church is called upon, LDR, FEMA, or the Red Cross will be available to assist you in setting up.
Currently, the only agency requesting volunteers is Serve Rhode Island. If interested in volunteering, call 401-331-2298 or local Red Cross or Salvation Army.
