Human Trafficking
Lutheran Social Services is a partner in the Rescue & Restore campaign coalition.
Approximately 14,500 to 17,500 foreign nationals, many of whom are children, are trafficked into the United States annually. In 2000, the federal government passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act to provide protection to immigrant victims of trafficking. This law provides survivors of human trafficking with a means to gain legal status.
Many survivors cannot take advantage of this legislation without legal assistance. Survivors of trafficking often suffer psychological trauma and lack the resources to hire an immigration attorney. Also, many are fearful and traumatized, and hesitate to engage with the legal system and law enforcement to apply for status.
Recognizing the need for legal assistance, Lutheran Social Services provides legal representation to victims of human trafficking. Our attorneys met intensively with the survivor, engage with law enforcement who may be investigating the trafficking incident, and assist the victim to apply for the T visa with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
