Become a Foster Parent

The need for foster parents for Unaccompanied Refugee Minors in Massachusetts is urgent.

Characteristics of Foster Parents of Refugees
  • Mature adults, single or married
  • Culturally competent to foster cross-culturally and cross-racially
  • Open and sensitive to the special needs of refugee youth
  • Good moral character and reputation
Responsibilities of Foster Parents of Refugees
  • Provide safe, secure, nurturing homes
  • Transportation 
  • School enrollments 
  • Attend court hearings 
  • Emotional and academic support
  • Willing to become an integral member of a team of professionals
  • Work toward a common goal
  • Coordinate health and dental needs
Procedure to Become a Foster Parent of a Refugee
  • Attend an orientation session and successfully complete 12 hours of training
  • Complete LSS Foster Home and Licensing applications
  • Provide references
  • Pass local record and medical clearances 
  • Participate in a home study
  • Allow LSS reasonable access to the home to verify compliance to state licensing
