Who can become a foster parent? .

Adults who can commit to providing a caring home to a child in need... Adults who can build on their current parenting skills and are open to learning new ones... Adults who can provide safety, stability, and structure that allow children to grow and develop.

LSS foster parents have diverse backgrounds and experiences. Some provide long-term homes, some provide short-term respite, some are single, some are part of large families, some have never had children of their own and some are grandparents. Like foster children, every foster parent is unique. Foster parents must be able to look past the “label” placed on a child and find the strengths that will allow that child to successfully move into healthy adulthood. They must participate in a required training program offered without charge in various locations statewide, and must meet state guidelines for foster parenting, which include having a high school diploma or GED, and being at least 21 years of age.
