LSS RESPONDS TO VICTIMS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE TORNADO
On Thursday, July 24th, violent storms and a tornado barreled through New Hampshire impacting 11 towns and nearly 6,000 homes. One person died. Governor Lynch declared a state of emergency in five counties.
FEMA has not yet declared this a federal response area. This means that no federal dollars have yet been allocated to assist our neighbors in New Hampshire!
Therefore, on July 28th, the NH Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) urgently requested that Lutheran Disaster Response-New England (LDR-NE, a program of LSS) send a team of volunteers and staff into NH to do case management.
These individuals have been assigned to the disaster sites to assess damages, talk with persons needing assistance, and help provide and fund the essential food, shelter and clothing for those affected by the disaster.
We just received this update from the LSS Team at the disaster site:
“The Fairfield Marriot Hotel and the Courtyard Marriot Hotel in New Hampshire have generously donated four rooms for our volunteers until Sunday! The NH Food Bank has offered to feed all our volunteers as well. NH Volunteer has been working round the clock to provide us with whatever we need. We have a total of four volunteers and one staff member (me) here currently. We have an additional four volunteers heading up for the weekend. The Bailey Restaurant has donated a dinner Saturday for up to ten volunteers."
"Here’s an update on the extent of the damage:
· 18 homes affected but habitable · 55 homes minor damage · 46 homes major damage · 20 homes destroyed · Numerous homes with property damage, downed trees and such
“I hope this update helps for anyone who wishes to stay informed or donate.”
