Lutherans Partnering to Help Neighbors in Need

LSS Neighbor to Neighbor

On any given Sunday morning, someone who needs help is sitting in the pew right next to someone who is willing to help. They greet each other during the Passing of the Peace and miss the opportunity. Neighbor to Neighbor, a partnership program between Lutheran Social Services and Lutheran churches and congregations of other denominations in Fairfield County, Connecticut, hopes to change that by matching volunteers from congregations with our neighbors who need assistance.

Our mission is to make life a little easier for our friends and neighbors, and to maintain and enhance their ability to live in the community with fewer worries. Volunteers, with the professional resources of Lutheran Social Services, offer in-home, non-medical support to members of the community in need. This support may include: friendly visits, telephone calls, yard work, transportation to appointments or to church, assistance with grocery shopping or meal preparation, companionship and recreational outings. Neighbor to Neighbor Receives $40,000 Wheat Ridge Grant

Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) has received a $40,000 grant from the Grants Plus Program of Wheat Ridge Ministries, which supports new and innovative health and human care programs led by congregations and nonprofit organizations affiliated with the Lutheran community. N2N is a new ministry that emerged from a collaboration of eight Lutheran congregations in Fairfield County, Conn., in partnership with LSS. Their desire to reach out and respond to their neighbors in need, inspired by Christ's love, is an expression of the LSS and Wheat Ridge missions. In turn, the congregations are inspiring their members to offer their time, talent and compassionate friendship to isolated, frail elders in need in their congregations and in the community. The eight participating congregations include: Salem, Bridgeport, Conn.; Good Shepherd, Monroe, Conn.; Grace, Stratford, Conn.; Holy Cross (LCMS), Trumbull, Conn.; Holy Trinity (Slovak Zion), Trumbull, Conn.; Joseph's Coat of Many Colors, Bridgeport, Conn.; Our Saviour's, Fairfield, Conn., and Trinity, Milford, Conn.
