Transitional Living for Single Mothers and Their Children

Single mother and childLutheran Social Services of New England directs two programs for single teenage mothers and their children. Both offer transitional living in a supportive environment for low income and often homeless mothers who, with the help of staff, gain the skills necessary to manage life successfully when they leave.

The Florence House in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the Ruth House in Brockton, Massachusetts, serve parenting teens.

Mothers may reside for up to two years, during which they set realistic goals and develop skills for independent living. These include home management, budgeting, parenting, problem solving and nutrition. Life within the community enables the women to learn about and share the responsibilities and chores of daily living, such as childcare, housekeeping, food preparation and shopping.

All women are required to enroll in an educational or vocational program within six months of residence. Professional staff help them make safe and suitable child care arrangements at the program or through one of the local child care centers. Group and individual counseling is often an important ingredient in a successful transition to independent living.

The Florence House opened its doors in 1987 and can accommodate up to 25 parenting teens and children. The Ruth House teen living program opened in the mid 1990's. Both residences are locked and well staffed, so those women who have been in abusive relationships may feel safe.  The Ruth House also offers support for young families, including fathers.

The majority of young women receive public assistance, including support from the Department of Transitional Assistance, food stamps and Aid to Families with Dependent Children. They must contribute 30 percent of their funds to program operations. Acceptance into the programs depends upon a woman's willingness to accept a contract that includes house rules, a fee arrangement, a life planning contract, and services provided by LSS.
